Counselors, educators, mentors, and parents facilitating Puzzle Partner one-to-one with young people ages 7–18, especially when they want a concrete, low-stakes way to explore how people give, receive, and clarify information. The webguide includes a separate optional partner-pair variation for later adaptation.

Core Focus

Creates room to notice how different perspectives, available information, and word choices shape understanding—and to practice slowing down, asking for clarity, and working through a misunderstanding together.

Target Competencies

  • Clear, usable communication: using descriptive language that gives another person enough information to act.
  • Curious listening and clarification: asking questions and checking understanding rather than treating confusion as a failure.
  • Perspective-taking: considering what another person can see, know, or reasonably infer.
  • Collaborative repair: slowing down, adding needed detail, and trying different language when understanding breaks down.
  • Flexible persistence: staying engaged with a manageable challenge and adjusting the approach when the first attempt does not work.

Inside the design

"It is incredibly frustrating when you feel like you are explaining yourself clearly, but the other person just isn’t getting it. Kids feel this all the time with adults, and adults feel it with kids. I wanted to give them a way to practice that without all the fighting. Puzzle Partner makes it clear that effective communication isn’t only about saying what makes sense in your own head; it is about helping the other person understand what you mean—and being willing to ask when you need more."

Design Rationale

Communication can break down even when both people are trying to cooperate. Puzzle Partner presents a shared problem centered on translating what someone sees into information that someone else can act on. Rather than treating misunderstanding as proof that someone isn’t listening or not trying, the activity creates a reason to ask what detail, question, or new wording might help.

Both parties consider how context, perspective, and language influence communication by working in complementary roles. The goal is to offer a fun way to explore where communication breakdowns happen and the processes that can help bridge that gap.
